Seasonal to Decadal Temperature Variations in the Faroe-Shetland Inflow Waters

چکیده
A 53 years hind-cast simulation with a regional version of the Nansen Center version of the Miami Isopycnic Coordinate Ocean Model (MICOM) has been conducted to explore the nature of the observed seasonal to inter-annual variations in the temperature of the pole-ward flowing Atlantic Water (AW) crossing the IcelandScotland Ridge (ISR). It is found that the simulated long-term temperature variations closely resemble observations south of the ridge (Rockall Trough), north of the ridge (Svinøy section) and between (Faroe Shetland Channel, FSC). The simulated temperature on the Faroe Shelf is also compared to daily temperature observations from Mykines, revealing realistic long-term temperature variations, seasonal variations and a realistic seasonal modulation. The simulated time series in the FSC indicates that the phase and amplitude of the annual temperature cycle of the AW have varied by almost one month and 0.15 oC between the 1960s and 2001, illustrating the difficulty in unambiguously removing the seasonal cycle from the, sparsely sampled, time series. It is argued that the simulated time series can be used to complement the observed time series in periods with sparse sampling. Specifically, the observation-based cold anomaly in the late 1960s and the warming in the early 1980s should be treated with caution. Finally, the analysis indicates that it is not advisable to survey the hydrographic section less than four times a year if reliable decadal scale temperature variations are of interest.

Seasonal Variations of Seawater Properties in the Southwestern Coastal Waters of the Caspian Sea
Seasonal variations of the seawater properties (e.g. temperature, salinity, density and chlorophyll-a) in western part of the southern coastal waters of the Caspian Sea near the Iranian coast were studied. A portable CTD probe was applied for profiling from sea surface to bottom at 23 stations. Maximum depth of the profiling stations was more than 470 m in the study area. Vertical structure of ...

The European “Slope Current” provides a shelfedge conduit for Atlantic Water, a substantial fraction of which is destined for the northern North Sea, with implications for regional hydrography and ecosystems. Drifters drogued at 50 m in the European Slope Current at the Hebridean shelf break follow a wide range of pathways, indicating highly variable Atlantic inflow to the North Sea. Slope Curr...

An analysis of current profiles carried out on moored Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler data sets recorded during the Variability of Exchanges In the Northern Seas project is presented here for several locations in three sections in the vicinity of the Iceland-Scotland Ridge: (1) north of the Faroes, (2) in the Faroe-Bank Channel and (3) in the Faroe-Shetland Channel. Total currents have been d...
متن کاملAssessing Chlorophyll-a in the Southwestern Coastal Waters of the Caspian Sea
Caspian Sea with an average depth of 27m is the largest enclosed water body in the world. Despite its enormity and valuable biotic and economic resources, investigations on the biota and seawater properties are mosaic at best. In previous studies, the monitoring of the chlorophyll-a concentrations in the Southern Caspian Sea was organized based on satellite data sets however, vertical dis...

In addition, visual predators are generally less abundant in extremes of low temperature. The appropriate combination of conditions is rarely found in shelf sea waters, and the majority of the overwintering stock resides at depths of 600-2000m in the open ocean, especially in the Norwegian Sea and, it is assumed, in the Labrador/ Irminger Sea in the northwest Atlantic. In the Norwegian Sea, the...
